Class and style with iron mirrors
Wrought iron mirrors represents something timeless; they are artistic, stylish and beautiful pieces of decoration.
These classic, yet modern designs can without a doubt be used with great success in a wide variety of interior settings from the very rustic or traditional to the ultra modern and "hip" ones.
The distinct mirrors made out of wrought iron are equally at home in a larger house as they are in a smaller apartment or condo.
In fact, a well placed mirror tends to add a subtle sense of space to a smaller room. When combined with other matching items of choice, you can blend them perfectly into almost any room inside your home.
The iron mirrors can be found in a vast array of finishes, shapes and sizes. If you can’t find any pre-fabricated ones of your immediate liking, it is quite achievable to have one specially designed and made for you.
Naturally the cost would be a limiting factor for many of us if we’re talking about a hand made mirror frame and non-standard glass.
You will find however, that the models being readily available off the shelf and accessible offline or online, should suit most tastes, wants, needs and funds.
"It’s a steel"
What is commonly referred to as wrought iron these days, is actually more often than not mild steel. How come? Mostly because real wrought iron – the old material of the blacksmith artisans – is costly and very hard to come by nowadays.
Genuine charcoal wrought iron is as good as rust proof – it is able to withstand corrosion for hundreds of years. In the Westminster Abbey cathedral in London (UK) there are railings made of wrought iron, dating back to the thirteenth century. A newer variety of wrought iron (from the nineteenth century) is called puddled iron and it’s as close as you get to the real deal.
Mild steel was discovered in 1856 while attempts were made to mass-produce wrought iron. It’s an alloy of iron and carbon – made by melting cast iron and removing carbon and slag. Mild steel is cheaper than puddled iron; it is also stronger and has a better consistency. However it is not resistant to corrosion. Consequently you will find this "wrought iron" being galvanized, coated with zinc, powder coated, painted or lacquered.
Mirror shapes and sizes
You will find the mirrors available in a broad selection of sizes and shapes. They can be oval, round, rectangular or square. They can be very small – or so large that they basically have to be placed on the floor.
Mirror styles and designs
You can observe an endless variety of mirror designs – from the basic and simplistic to the very ornate and intricate. They can have shelves and even stylish lamps. The glass can be beveled or non-beveled. You find them with frames or with metal borders
Wrought iron colors
Because they are almost exclusively finished off in paints etc., you see a lot of great colors and textures: bronze, gold white, black, "rust", silver and so on.
Potential downsides to wrought iron
Since they are made of metal and glass they tend to be heavy. Hence you need to be careful when you hang the larger ones on a wall. shipment/transport also can be rather costly due to the weight factor.
The finer, some times all hand made, wrought iron type mirrors also tend to cost more, simply because of the limited numbers being produced and the manual labor involved.
However, they tend to give a unique and highly personal twist to your home and will always be something you can be proud of displaying in your home.
